about the watch
In 2004, Patek Philippe revealed the new Calatrava reference 5196, a descendant of the legendary reference 96. This important release has since become one of Patek's most appreciated watches in recent years, winning the hearts of collectors through a modernisation of the movement without altering the aesthetic essence that defines the Calatrava.
The 5196 has faithfully preserved the defining features of its predecessor: baton hour markers, dauphine hands, a small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock, and a case shape reminiscent of the original reference 96. To modernise their offering and appeal to a broader audience, Patek introduced both a 31mm case and a 37mm case. The 37mm version, as seen here, has become a collector's classic over the years and one of our personal favourites. Its proportions are impeccable, making it easily wearable with a variety of outfits.
The silver dial is exceptional, shifting in tone depending on the light, from white to gray, showcasing Patek's savoir-faire. The yellow gold case paired with a leather bracelet creates one of the classiest watch configurations imaginable, making the 5196J a must-have for any serious collector and an ideal entry point into the world of high-end watchmaking that is synonymous with Patek Philippe.
The watch is in mint condition, so both the bracelet and case have been slightly worn but no major scratches, bumps or defects can be seen.
The watch is sold with its full original set, including the box and warranty card.
The hand wind movement is a caliber 215 PS, which runs perfectly well.
